The Stand-up Desk Company was started by Mr. Martin Burns in 1982. He started the business because his back ached from sitting too long at his desk, and suspected that there were a number of others like him. It turns out he was right. In fact a study of over 31,000 Boeing Company employees  document that sitting puts 40-80% more stress on the back than standing. The stand-up desk has been around a long time. Some pretty famous people have used them.  Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Virginia Woolf, and even Thomas Jefferson worked at these unique desks. For some of our customers, even the best designed ergonomic chairs do not provide enough comfort to relive the stress on their backs; others, however, assert that they simply feel more alert and more productive working and thinking on their feet.

In 1993 Jeff Dahlquist came onboard and began building desks. When  Marty retired in 2009, Jeff took over the business and renamed it The Stand-Up Desk Company of Virginia LLC. The desks have had subtle improvement over the years. The reverence for materials, superior craftsmanship, and dedication to service still remains the same--just as the day the first desk was built. We invite you to look around our website and treat the photos you see as a starting point for selecting a stand-up desk.  We look forward to constructing a desk that suits your specific needs.
